Hot and Humid

The last few days were HOT and today was HOT and Humid.

I didn’t get to water my containers until late in the evening. The plants had wilted due to the heat and humidity.

I’m hoping I can get outside to trim the leaves off the plants that needs it. We did go to Walmart and we picked up some String lights for of our porch.

I’m still working on the inside of our home. We were given a big projector TV for free , we don’t watch it and it’s now taking up space that I want to use. So, in the next few day it will be going to Goodwill unless we can find someone who wants it.

I did move a few pieces around to make being in kitchen easier for me. It got me thinking more about painting the walls in the kitchen.

More on that later .

The String lights we bought from Walmart. WordPress finally “uploaded” this picture so I thought I would update my post.

Container Garden

We have had a lot of rain here lately.

The rain is needed to help our veggies grow in addition to us watering them.

The peppers are coming along nicely. I’m surprised that the potatoes are staring to show life. We planted the potatoes so late , I’m grateful that they are showing life. These pictures were taken on August 3rd,2020.

Some of our tomatoes aren’t showing anything so we’re not sure if it’s too early or if the a disease /bugs got to them. I’m going to take more pictures of the containers later. I’ve been trimming the dead leaves off the plants to help them survive. I have started a compost pile from the leaves of the plants and the leaves that have fallen in our yard.

Our yard is still a mess, we can’t use power tools in the rain so a few projects have been put on hold at least for now.

I’m still working on the inside of our home, rearranging things, painting and trying to declutter. Decluttering seems to be the hardest for me since I use most everything in our home. Whether it some type of Decor or things I use in the kitchen.

Hope everyone is doing GOOD!!!

Container Gardening

We had so much rain and humidity here for the last 2 weeks on and off that hindered us from doing anything outside.

In between the constant rain and a few times it stop , we managed to get our plants in containers. We made a shelf high off the ground so critters won’t get to them. So, far it worked but how we had the plants placed they weren’t getting enough sunlight.

We have lots of tomatoes , some cucumbers, mint and sweet basil. We used an old Bathroom Tub for our potatoes. Hopefully, the potatoes will grow, this is the first time trying to grow potatoes.

We are new to growing more food this year. We have some experience with tomatoes and peppers. I need to get out 2 more containers so I can plant my lettuces. My seeds came in that I ordered but unfortunately the mint lettuce was out of stock.

The pot that I put the sweet basil is crowded so they will have to be separated into other containers. We are still trying to figure out where to place everything for maximum sunny light. We’ve been busy with the inside of our home and have finished some projects but not all. Some projects have been temporarily on hold. We found a new leak on our tip out so that has to be redone. The leak is in what use to be my room. It didn’t leak that bad but it was enough for me to take all my belongings out, I didn’t want the laptop or other things ruined.

The leak got fixed but I decided to give the room to our cats, They really needed a place to eat and hangout. We had to keep their food up high because our dog would eat their food and her own food.

We are taking it one day at a time here. It’s hard to believe that it’s almost the end of July. 2020 has been a strange year to say the least. It doesn’t “feel” like it should be mid-summer.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Staying Home

We went to Walmart so my son could cash his paycheck. All I wanted to do was stay home.

I’ve wanted nothing to do with the outside world for the last week. It seems like this is recurring with me from time to time. For so reason it really hit home that I don’t want to go anywhere and do as little as possible.

I’ve been keeping to myself and watching videos and reading blogs on homesteading, gardening , self sufficiency. Not so much on watching or reading about decorating your home on a budget, hauls, or anything that has to do with decorating.

For the most part our home is decorated or filled with everything we really like /love. I don’t really enjoy shopping like I use to which is a good thing. We are paying our bills and paying off some debt we have. We don’t know if hubby will have a job to go back to. He hasn’t heard anything from his Company. So, like many people it’s a wait and see as the Country is slowly opening back up.

I’ve been cooking and cleaning around the house. I’m really wanting to get outside and do more work in our yard. We have had crazy weather here on and off for the last week. We brought in our hanging baskets because we had a freeze warning and will continue to have freeze warning until Monday. The temp tomorrow is suppose to be in the 60s but night temps are below freezing.

This weather is strange , I don’t remember last May being like this. Next week the temps are suppose to be in the 60s to 70s but Thunderstorms are also forecasted. We did get a piece of wood for our fence and it is put up. It’s part privacy and part noise control. I also put an outdoor rug on our patio. That’s as far as I got with the patio. I have plants that I want to put on the patio but the weather is preventing me from doing that.

I will get outside tomorrow and do some work , take my plants out . I want to get our patio area “DOLLED UP”. I’m going to see if my hubby can build me a small bench or two for some of the plants we bought.

Is there any projects you’ve been working on??

The Patio, The befores

We’ve been working on outside projects and the Patio is one of those projects.

We have a ways to go before anything is complete. The Garden Enclosure will be started this weekend or early next week. The Patio was an idea from my hubby and I agreed to it . We have a porch that we could use but we wanted an area away from the house.

The front part of our yard was kind of a dead space. We didn’t use it for anything so now we have the start of a patio. The hubby is letting me come up with ideas of how to make it a useful and cozy space .

As you can see it’s not much or pretty for that matter. The grille and wood have been removed. The racks are going to be used as plant holders. We are going to put a piece of wood up against the fence for privacy and noise reduction.

I’m still looking for outside furniture but haven’t found anything I really like. So, I’m going to use dinning chairs that we already have for the time being. We have wood to make a few tables. I’ve got plants so they will be on the patio. We might have to buy a few more pavers but not sure if we will or not, I think we have some but they are smaller than what is already down.

We have a frost warning so we brought in our hanging baskets for the night. Tomorrow they will go back outside and I will get the planters from our back part of the yard and get the flowers transplanted .

Venturing Out

We decided to go out today to a City about half an hour away.

When I first moved to West Virginia, it’s the City I moved to. Considering that West Virginia doesn’t have many Cities, It has everything or most everything someone who likes Cities to have. It’s not a bad City, I just prefer a quieter pace of life.

Even with everything that is still not open , there was A lot of traffic. Of course Walmart was open and Dollar Tree, Dollar Generals and some food places. We did stop n Walmart to get our Fishing licenses. While we were there, we decided to do some shopping.

I did pick up a Pressure Cooker/Canner as it is something I’ve wanted for a long while now. Since we decided to start a garden this year, I’m hoping to get to use it. I also picked up a Cast Iron Dutch Oven. I’ve been wanting one of those as well. I’m wanting to eventually replace all my cookware with Cast Iron.

I’m still doing research on the Pressure Canner. I’ve had a few Cast Iron pieces a long time ago , I like how food cooks and tastes.

Overall, Us going to the City was pretty uneventful. One of the reasons for us going out was to see about a Bench that someone had for sale we never heard back from that person so we decided to stop at Walmart and get our Fishing Licenses.

I don’t have Patio furniture so I’m checking Facebook Market Place to see what I can find since the thrift stores are still closed. At our local Goodwill , I’ve seen Patio Furniture . When it comes to outside furniture , I really don’t like paying full price. So, the hunt is still on for outside furniture.

For the next several days it’s suppose to rain here so not much will get done outside. It sucks because I’m wanting to get the enclosure built so I can start our garden. So, while it raining , we will doing things inside our home.

Front garden

We’ve been getting A LOT of rain as of late.

It seems that we might have to redo our front garden with all the rain we’ve been getting I don’t think the seeds that I planted are still there. I did however plant flowers against a border that we built .

So, far the plants are doing well with all the rain. There are other flower/plants through out our yard so I might transplant some of those. We will have to see how that goes. Rain is in our forecast for the next week. I’d really like to get working on our greenhouse/plant enclosure but that will have to wait a little while.

I’ve been rearranging and rearranging things inside our home. At the moment our bedroom is my “dreaded space. I’d love to have a wardrobe closet to “hid” our clothes. Since everything is still closed and openings aren’t going to happen for a little while, the clothes will be “show cased”.

Hubby is still unemployed and he doesn’t think it will be anytime soon for his job to call him back. The Company he worked for laid off even more people after his layoff. He has received his unemployment checks. I’m able to figure out our monthly bills and make a budget for that.

My son still has his job and he pays us rent. That money goes towards our food so it’s not included in the other money. Overall, We’ve been doing okay with everything including the hubby being home all the time.

We have several things that we want to do around here and with the hubby being home things can finally start or be finished.

I hope everyone is doing well during all this.

Thank you for stopping by.

Unexpected, Old Gas Turn off Valve

We did more work outside today as the temps were near 70 degrees.

As we cleared out the other planter we found an old Gas turn off valve. We didn’t know it was there because of the ground cover plants. Once, we realized what it was we were careful about how we went about clearing everything out of the flower bed.

We didn’t block it in completely. I left the tiger lilies pretty much where they were planted. I did put the rest of the wild flower seeds in the flower bed. I’m hoping that they don’t get washed away with the rain we are getting now.

We had planned on cleaning a smaller flower bed out but our neighbors to an end to that. They were having a cookout ,drinking and getting quite loud. We have other neighbors that do that also but they keep their voices down for the most part. It’s generally a quiet Mobile Home Park to live in.

So, we called it a day and came inside .We had pizza for dinner as it was the quickest thing to make . If the weather is good tomorrow ,we will finish the smaller flower box then be done with the front half of our yard . Hopefully , this week we can start on the enclosure for the vegetable garden. I can’t wait to get it started. Nothing tastes better than Homegrown food.

Cleaning the front half of the yard

We prepared our flower bed outside our fence. I dug all the weeds and other things out of the flower bed.

Still have a ways to go. Last fall I bought a box a Wild Seeds on clearance from Dollar General. I’m going to be putting them in the flower bed. We are going to expand the other flower bed that is on the other side of the Arbor.

There are so many pavers that have to be moved. We are going to be repurposing them as a flower bed border. We pulled the bigger pavers to put liner under them. The grass that was under the pavers was removed. It was good to actually get outside for once in quite sometime. I’m glad that it didn’t rain like what was forecasted.

We are using what we had and what was left here, the only things that are new is the fence and the posts. Everything is a mess and I’m okay with it looking like it does. We still have to finish up outside and it will take sometime. Eventually we want to replace the steps leading to up to our porch.

Hopefully, tomorrow will be as nice as today was so we can get back out and do some more work. I need to get my planters out so I can put some seeds in them for the bench . Tomorrow will putting flower seeds in the ground as long as the weather is nice.

I want to take off everything off our porch so I clean give it a major cleaning. I’m not sure when the porch was last cleaned . I’d love to use the porch more than we do now. I’d like to enjoy the outside more than I have in the past.

Outside Fencing

We decided to tackle the fencing outside.

The gate on our fence and the fence itself was falling apart. The hubby took everything down so it all could be replaced. Then he built the frame work and added 2 more posts so I could have an Arbor.

The first picture is the old posts and fence. The second picture is the start of posts, the Arbor. He stopped because it was getting too cold to continue. We still need to work on “fixing” the walkway, the patio area, the little garden area outside the yard. The cat tree on the porch is falling apart so it will be coming off the porch.

I want to take everything off the porch so it can be cleaned really well. I’d like to say that we could do all that this week but it’s suppose to rain all week long. The temps aren’t going to be that great either. So, I’m probably going to do more stuff inside our home.

The enclosure for the garden still needs to be built. We still have a few things that need to be taken out of the back part of our yard. With the weather being what it has been, I’m getting things done inside.

Eventually I’d like to enclose the porch. It’s been on my wish list of things to do since we moved in. I’d love to sit on the porch with the flies, bugs attacking us. I have an idea how I’d like the porch to look so we will see if that will become a reality .

Have you been working on any projects inside or outside your home??
